Robert was the son of Caeser (a Labourer and Farmer) and his wife Hannah Fisher of Kingsley Holt, Staffordshire. Robert was a Coal Miner 1891, and a Colliery Engine Driver 1901. Robert's first wife Mary died in 1875, after just two years of marriage. They had one son Isaac Edmund.
