Thomas was the illegitimate son of Hannah Brandrick nee Hawkins. When Thomas married in 1866 he used the name Brandrick and also for his first child's baptism. On his other children's baptism's they are named Bettany, after his stepfather Thomas Bettany. On the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census the family are named Bettany.
